These reservoirs are then redeveloped for the safe injection, trapping and withdrawal of fuel, ensuring resources are readily available to meet peak or seasonal energy demands
Underground fuel storage plays a critical role in the transition to a greener energy mix by providing essential backup for intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar, which enhances grid stability. Today, most underground storage is used for natural gas, a transitional fuel that balances energy demand as more renewables are integrated into the grid. In the future as the energy transition progresses, underground storage will be repurposed for hydrogen and other transitional fuels, or converted for carbon capture and storage, further reinforcing the pathway towards a low-carbon future.
